Developing photographs

Developing photographs

Developing Photographs is a biographical exploration of my personal dependence with the photographic medium in relation to the family album.

Following the alchemical stages as well as pseudo-scientific experiments and pseudo-tribal rituals, the unconscious is used as a photo lab to develop family album photographs; the piece flourishes as a quest to reconstitute photography’s otherworldly power. Laws of alchemical symbolism rule the piece, along with shamanism and witchcraft, within a Jungian psychoanalytical framework.

This body of work questions and challenges the possibilities of a different approach to photography, reclaiming intuition and magical thinking as valid tools to understand, critique and consume photography.  Developing Photographs celebrates the value of the unknown, the importance of imagination and unreason as well as it ultimately reflects upon the role of the artist in society.

The piece was shown in Hangzhou, China, as part of the collective show Three-Fold. May-July 2017.

A live performance is part of the piece on opening night.
